Employees of OpenAI demand that the board quit, while Sam Altman tempts them with Microsoft offers.

The board of directors of OpenAI not only fired Altman, but also showed co-founder Greg Brockman the exit door. Over 500 of OpenAI’s 700 workers have requested the board to quit.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT might control the market, but for the time being, the drama in its office is ruling social media and the news cycle. Sam Altman, the company’s co-founder and CEO, was just sacked. The gossip mill stated that Altman and the board disagreed on issues such as profit and security. Mira Murati, the temporary CEO of OpenAI, quickly took his post.

But, but, but…. It doesn’t stop there. The board of directors of OpenAI not only fired Altman, but they also showed co-founder Greg Brockman the exit door, allegedly for supporting Altman’s methods. Furthermore, Mira Murati was removed as temporary CEO three days after her hiring by former Twitch head Emmett Shear. According to media sources, Murati wanted Altman and Brockman back at OpenAI and was therefore ousted by the board.

In an unusual turn of events, over 500 of OpenAI’s 700 workers have urged the board of directors to quit, according to writer Kara Swisher on X (previously Twitter). They said that the process of removing Altman and Brockman had jeopardised their objective as a group.

They also expressed their dismay and displeasure with the sudden move from Mira Murati to Emmett Shear. They wrote to the board, “Yet, within two days of your initial decision, you again replaced interim CEO Mira Murati against the best interests of the company.”

They have also threatened the OpenAI Board of Directors with resignation. The letter’s signatories have stated that if the board fails to act, they would join Altman and Brockman at Microsoft’s new AI endeavour.

“We, the undersigned, may choose to resign from OpenAl and join the newly announced Microsoft subsidiary run by Sam Altman and Greg Brockman,” the letter stated. If we opt to join, Microsoft has told us that there would be opportunities for all OpenAl personnel at this new company. We will take this action as soon as possible until all present board members resign and the board chooses two new lead independent directors, such as Bret Taylor and Will Hurd, as well as reinstating Sam Altman and Greg Brockman.”
