OpenAI has introduced a “lightweight” version of its Deep Research tool, making it accessible to all ChatGPT users, including those on the free tier. This new version is powered by OpenAI’s o4-mini model, offering a cost-effective alternative to the original Deep Research, which remains exclusive to paid subscribers.
Key Features of the Lightweight Deep Research Tool:
Availability: Free users can utilize the lightweight Deep Research tool for up to 5 tasks per month. Paid subscribers (Plus, Team, and Pro) have a combined total of 25 tasks per month across both versions, with Pro users receiving 250 tasks. Enterprise and Education users will gain access the following week with the same limits as Team and Plus users.
Functionality: The lightweight version performs similarly to the original Deep Research but delivers shorter responses while maintaining depth and quality. It autonomously conducts multi-step research by browsing the web, analyzing information, and synthesizing findings into comprehensive reports.
Cost Efficiency: Designed to be significantly cheaper to operate, the lightweight model enables OpenAI to expand access to more users without compromising on performance.
This development allows users across all tiers to leverage advanced AI-driven research capabilities, enhancing their ability to gather and analyze information efficiently.
